18k yellow-gold bezel set with baguette-cut diamonds, original Rolex
18168
Absolutely spectacular configuration Day-Date; combining numerous collectible and highly unusual aspects.
Let's take it one step at a time, starting with the most notable feature: the dial. This stone dial, or more specifically: metamorphic rock dial, has a captivating blue colour that contrasts the yellow gold so strongly. Rolex' with Lapis Lazuli are hard to come by and this specific specimen has a very appealing composition; almost completely lacking any calcite inclusions, but very nicely spread pyrite spots. Most importantly: the dial is completely in tact, no flaws, blemishes, hairlines, defects in printing or cracks whatsoever. At the 6 o'clock position it is signed "T Swiss T', indicating it is a first series execution, matching the period it was delivered in. The correct "closed" handset is still mounted.
Any Day-Date with such a dial is a dream for most collectors, whatever case surrounds it. But it doesn't stop there as it is mounted in the highly scarce reference 18168; indicating a factory-set bezel with baguette-cut gemstones. Diamonds always bring something extra to the table, but here it especially enhances the simplicity of the dial. Now, for the seasoned collectors and avid Day-Date lovers, a Lapis Lazuli 18168 might sound familiar. There is one other specimen known that was first brought to light in 2015, when it reached almost 3 times the high-estimate during the "Glamorous Day-Date auction" by Phillips. Interestingly enough, the serial of our example is only a couple digits away from the previously mentioned and important lot. (both are: 91786xx). Perhaps someone ordered two of these special pieces back in 1986. This watch was subsequently sold in Dubai by Christies in 2021.
Ours does feature a different bracelet, and yes; it is rarer. Somehow the understated baguettes (opposed to more flashy brilliants) work really well with an Oyster bracelet, that also flies a bit more under the radar than the well-known President bracelet. The period-correct, Riveted construction is still in good condition.
Really something for the spoiled collector that has no interest settling for ordinary examples. Luckily, providing such extravagant and challenging watches is right in our street and we have outdone ourselves with this one.
