Not all Datejusts are created equal, and this creation is certainly superior to most.
The Rolex Datejust doesn’t need an introduction. It’s one of the most iconic Rolex models, combining luxury and sportiness at an entry-level price. The Datejust can be worn by everybody at any occasion and therefore, we believe it's the perfect watch. But, there is a niche within this line that even the most seasoned collectors find interesting.
You might be familiar with the reference 1601, 1603 and 1600. Probably, you also know the successors of these references. However, what do you know about the earlier references like the 6305? This reference was introduced in the mid '50s, a little less than ten years after the introduction of the first Datejust reference 4467.
The 6305 came in 2 iterations: this being the earlier one (6305-1) and is the first to feature a fluted bezel. Yet, it is more finely milled and therefore rather dubbed 'coin-edge'. Albeit the bezel being in 18k white gold, the rest of the 'Ovettone' case, measuring 36mm, is executed in steel. Same goes for the Oyster bracelet, but there is something odd going on there. The centre-links are "missing", well at least it is some "skeletonized" execution of it. We are unable to confirm or deny this was delivered or produced by Rolex this way. Certainly the clasp is original and dates back to the same year of the watch 1953 (4th Quarter).
If we go into details; we appreciate the Brevet crown and original "Roulette" date wheel still being in place. Furthermore it comes on a plexicrystal without cyclops, on request we can install a glass with the iconic loupe. This way, however, gives us the most unobstructed view of the star of the show: the "Waffle dial".
The most coveted type of dial, does not have a smooth surface but a waffle motif instead; also known as “Honeycomb”. Not unique to the Datejust, Rolex used this embellishing pattern on multiple models in the 50’s: like the 6202 Turn-O-Graph and the 6350 Explorer. (among others) However, this is considered the pinnacle of steel Rolex Datejusts. Apart from the shade, black or white, there is also a variety in the cliché used. Besides the spacing and graphics of the font, the clearest difference can be found in the smooth outer track: one being divided into 10 segments per 5 minutes, the other 5 segments per minute. This white one having the first mentioned lay-out. The dial has some blemishes, not unusual for its age, but overall is incredibly aesthetically pleasing with some nice and warm discolouration. The red Datejust printing and metal date aperture are the icing on the cake. There is no lume present on the dial or in the original leaf hands.
It is not often that beauty, rarity and wearability is combined so strongly in one watch. We are extremely pleased to showcase and offer this incredibly well-kept piece of horological history.
