A complicated Neptune in precious metal đź”±

The Neptune was launched in 1996 as Patek Philippe’s new luxury sports watch after the launch of the Nautilus in the 1970s and simultaneously with the Aquanaut.

The promotional tagline that was used: “Ideal for sportswear, the supremely elegant Neptune is, at the same time, the perfect dress watch.” The Neptune’s appropriately sized 37 mm case, sophisticated dial design and elegant stick hands highlighted its dressy aspect. Additionally, the 5085 features some interesting complications like the moonphase, date and power reserve. It might remind you of the 3712 dial lay-out, yet it precedes that Nautilus by 7 years! (The 5085 was introduced in 1998) On the other hand, its 30 meter depth rating, crown protectors, and integrated bracelet infused it with a sporty character.

Sales of the Neptune lagged and this wonderful hybrid was discontinued in 2005. The upside, of course, is that the Neptune can still be picked up for a reasonable price while prices of the Aquanaut and Nautilus have gone through the roof in recent years.

Truly a forgotten -or better yet; not yet fully discovered- gem from the extensive Patek Philippe historical catalogue. Especially in yellow gold it breathes 90’s and early 00’s vibes. It remains in great condition and additionally an extract of the archives could be requested.
